Your Questions
Frequently
Asked Questions
Do you have any questions or need clarification on something? Feel free to ask, and I’ll be happy to assist!
Is immunotherapy effective for leukaemia?
Immunotherapy is an advanced treatment that helps the body’s immune system fight leukaemia cells. It is mainly used for specific types of leukaemia, such as some instances of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). This treatment works by either boosting the immune response or targeting cancer cells directly. While immunotherapy has shown promising results in some patients, it is not suitable for everyone and is often combined with other treatments like chemotherapy or targeted therapy. The effectiveness depends on factors like the patient’s overall health, the type of leukaemia, and how the body responds to treatment.
How does Amerix Cancer Hospital provide the best care for leukaemia patients?
Amerix Cancer Hospital is a one-stop solution for all your cancer care requirements. The hospital offers specialised leukaemia treatment by highly experienced doctors and nurses. The hospital has all kinds of treatment options available under one roof. Amerix Cancer Hospital aims to provide compassionate patient care through proper treatment, nutritional care, and counselling.
What are the preventative measures to avoid leukaemia?
Leukaemia cannot always be prevented, but lifestyle changes may help lower the risk. Avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals, such as benzene found in industrial environments, can reduce the chances of developing leukaemia. Maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking are essential steps in keeping the immune system strong.
Is it easy to treat early-stage leukaemia?
Early-stage leukaemia is generally easier to manage compared to advanced stages, but treatment still depends on the type of leukaemia and the patient’s response to therapy. Acute leukaemias like ALL and AML require immediate and aggressive treatment, while chronic leukaemias like CLL and CML may not need urgent treatment in the early stages. The earlier it gets detected, the higher the chances of treatment. Early-stage cancer also has low remission rates compared to advanced stages.

Leukaemia Cancer Treatment Hospital in Delhi
Understanding leukaemia
Leukaemia is a type of cancer that begins in the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. It affects white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. When leukaemia cells grow in the blood, they crowd out normal cells, leading to problems like infections, anaemia, and bleeding. Unlike other cancers, leukaemia does not form a lump in the body. Instead, it spreads through the blood and bone marrow.
The disease can develop quickly or slowly. Some types grow fast and need urgent treatment, while others progress over time. Early detection helps in managing the disease better.
Types of leukaemia
There are different types of leukaemia. The main ones include:
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL):
- This type is most common in children but can also affect adults. It develops quickly and spreads fast if not treated. The common treatment for ALL is mostly chemotherapy and, in some cases, targeted therapy.
- Symptoms include fever, frequent infections, bruising, and bone pain. Because it progresses rapidly, early treatment is necessary.
Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML):
- Mostly found in adults but can also affect children. This type develops quickly and needs immediate medical attention. It is one of the more aggressive forms of leukaemia.Common symptoms include extreme fatigue, easy bruising, pale skin, and shortness of breath. Treatment often consists of a combination of chemotherapy and stem cell transplants.
Chronic Lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL):
- This is a slow-growing type of leukaemia, primarily seen in older adults. Some patients do not show symptoms for years, and treatment may not be required immediately.
- Some of the common symptoms of CLL can be swollen lymph nodes, tiredness, constant fatigue, and even weight loss. Treatment depends on how the disease progresses and may involve targeted therapy or chemotherapy.
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML):
- This type develops slowly, and patients can live for years without major symptoms. It is linked to a specific genetic change in the blood cells known as the Philadelphia chromosome.
- Symptoms may include fatigue, night sweats, and an enlarged spleen. Treatment often includes targeted therapy, which helps control the disease for an extended period.
Each type of leukaemia needs a different approach to treatment. Early diagnosis helps in choosing the right treatment plan.
Symptoms of leukaemia
leukaemia symptoms may not appear early. When they do, they can include:
Tiredness and Weakness:
- Patients often feel extremely tired even after getting enough rest. This happens because leukaemia affects the RBCs of the blood, which are the cells responsible for carrying oxygen to the different parts of the body. Without enough healthy red blood cells, fatigue becomes a constant problem.
Frequent Infections:
- A type of blood cell called the WBC is the body's immune cells. They help the body fight infections. In leukaemia, healthy white blood cells drop, making it harder for the body to fight off bacteria and viruses. This leads to frequent fevers, colds, and other infections.
Unusual Bleeding or Bruising:
- It is quitre common for leukaemia patients to bruise more easily or bleed for a longer time when they get skin cuts. This happens because of the low platelet count in the leukaemia patients which makes it difficult for them to clot the blood properly.
Bone or Joint Pain:
- Leukaemia can cause pain in the bones and joints. This happens because abnormal blood cells accumulate in the bone marrow, putting pressure on the bones. The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe aches.
Swollen Lymph Nodes:
- Lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, and groin may become swollen but usually are not painful. This happens when the body is trying to fight the abnormal blood cells.
These symptoms can be caused by other health problems, too, so seeing a doctor for tests is essential.
Treatment for leukaemia
varies a lot depending on the type and stage of the disease. The most common treatments are:
Chemotherapy:
- Chemotherapy is one of the traditional treatments available for leukaemia. It uses potent drugs which can kill the cancer cells specifically and effectively. These drugs may be given through injections or taken as tablets.
- Many patients report some side effects like hair loss, nausea, constant feeling of fatigue or tiredness and a weakened immune system.
Targeted Therapy:
- This treatment works by attacking specific changes in leukaemia cells. Unlike chemotherapy, it focuses only on the cancer cells, which helps in reducing side effects.
- Targeted therapy is one of the adbanced cancer treatments used to cure chronic leukaemias when there are some genetic changes which are inducing the disease.
Immunotherapy:
- Immunotherapy helps boost the body's immune system to recognise and attack leukaemia cells. It is a newer treatment and has shown promising results in some patients.
- Immunotherpat is available only in limited places and is only advised when all other traditional treatment options fail. Hpwever, it can work very well in some patients.
Stem Cell Transplant:
- A stem cell transplant replaces diseased bone marrow with healthy cells. This procedure is usually done after high-dose chemotherapy to remove the cancerous cells.
- Stem cell transplants can be used to treat very aggressive or advanced leukaemia cases. This treatment is mostly considered in patients who do not respond to other treatments.
Doctors decide on treatment based on the patient’s condition and test results.
