While living without a pancreas is possible through medical treatments, doctors only advise a pancreatic removal surgery when there is no other treatment option left and when the patient does not possess a serious threat after the surgery.

Surgical removal of the tumor from the pancreas can be the best chance of curing pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, surgeries are not a one-stop solution when cancer has advanced to other parts of the body.

Several studies have observed that cancer stays in the pancreas for up to 10 years before developing into a tumor. After tumor development, it can rapidly grow from stage 0 to 4 in a year in some cases.

Early-stage pancreatic cancers are often easily treatable. Recovering from pancreatic cancer can be a tough journey for any individual. The best you can do is find the right hospital, follow the doctor’s advice and have faith in the process. Advanced-stage pancreatic cancer patients may take years to recover completely from the cancer.

Studies have recently found that a specific combination of smoking, poor diet and diabetes is the most significant cause of pancreatic cancer. A lot of risk factors are involved in causing pancreatic cancer, and none of them can be ignored. Studies have also shown that once these risk factors are controlled, the symptoms reduce, and the cancer growth slows. By reducing the risk factors and quitting smoking, you can prevent pancreatic cancer.

Although its rare, pancreatic cancer may have implications on other organs like the heart, kidney, lungs, etc. Advanced-stage pancreatic cancer is known to metastasise and affect other parts of the body. Some studies have shown that advanced-stage pancreatic cancer can cause kidney problems like hematuria. Chances of such conditions might be increased if the patient is already a kidney patient or has undergone a transplant.

Pancreatic cancer is not as common as other kinds in India. It usually affects 2.4 per 100,000 men and 1.8 per 100,000 women.

You will find some of the best pancreatic cancer treatment hospitals in Delhi, offering world-class healthcare with the latest equipment.

Choosing the right pancreatic cancer treatment hospital in Delhi is essential to ensure optimal outcomes and long-term recovery.

Keep reading further to learn about pancreatic cancer and the factors responsible for choosing the best cancer hospital!

Pancreatic cancer originates in the tissues of the pancreas. It is a gland with two main functions: secretion of pancreatic juice, which helps digestion, and secretion of hormones like insulin and glucagon, which help regulate blood sugar levels.

Smoking and health history can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. It is not as common as other cancers but affects men and women almost equally.

    Types of Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer can be divided mainly into two types: Exocrine and endocrine pancreatic cancer.

    • Exocrine pancreatic cancer: It is by far the most common type of pancreatic cancer. It includes adenocarcinomas (80% of all exocrine pancreatic cancers), acinar cell cancers, and cystic tumors.
    • Endocrine pancreatic cancer: Also called pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) or islet cell tumors. These are very uncommon and affect the insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas.

    Staging of Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is divided into four primary states based on the advancement of tumor growth. The following are the stages:

    • Stage 1: Only the pancreatic tissue is affected. Stage 1 can be further divided into 1A and 1B.

In stage 1A, the tumor size is less than or equal to 2 centimeters.

In stage 1B, the tumor size is more significant than 2 but less than 4 centimeters.

    • Stage 2: Depending on the size and migration of the tumor, it is categorized into stage 2.

In stage IIA, the tumor is more significant than 4 centimeters.

In stage IIB, the tumor can be of any size, but it can spread into 1-3 nearby lymph nodes.

    • Stage III: The tumor can be of any size larger than previous stages, but it has spread to more than 4 nearby lymph nodes or major blood vessels near the pancreas.
    • Stage IV: The tumor has spread to other parts of the body like the lung, liver, or the peritoneal cavity.

Pancreatic cancers are notoriously hard to detect as they don't show clear signs till a particular stage.

Once the cancer has advanced a bit, these symptoms may be observed:

    • Jaundice (yellow-colored eyes or skin)
    • Light colored stool
    • Dark colored urine
    • Unexplained rapid weight loss
    • Loss of appetite
    • Constant feeling of fatigue
    • Pain in the back and upper or middle areas of the abdomen

If you see multiple signs mentioned above, consider consulting an oncologist.

    • Smoking: One of the leading causes of Pancreatic Cancer is smoking cigarettes containing tobacco. Smokers are twice as much at risk of getting pancreatic cancer than nonsmokers. Smoking contributes to over 25% of pancreatic cancer cases.

It is never too late to quit smoking. Research has shown that quitting smoking reduces the risk of cancer.

    • Obesity: One of the risk factors of pancreatic cancer is being overweight. Obese people are almost 20% more likely to suffer from pancreatic cancer.

Even if you are not obese, carrying extra weight around the waistline can be a risk factor for pancreatic cancer.

    • Age: Almost all the people who have pancreatic cancer are above 45-50 years of age. The risk is even higher for people beyond 65 years.
    • Lifestyle: Less physical activity, alcohol consumption, and low fiber diet can also increase the risk of getting pancreatic cancer.
    • Family history: Many studies have proved that pancreatic cancer can run in families. The reason is inheriting DNA mutations in genes like PRSS1.

There are multiple tests that a medical professional may suggest to detect and diagnose pancreatic cancer.

Some of the standard tests done for pancreatic cancers are as follows:

    • Blood tests: A routine blood test that detects the level of certain bodily compounds like bilirubin may indicate a disease condition linked to the pancreas.
    • Tumor marker testing: Bodily fluids like blood and urine or tissue samples can be collected to measure tumor markers like carcinoembryonic antigens indicating the presence of tumors.
    • Imaging tests: CT scans, MRI, and PET scans can give a detailed analysis of cancer metastasis.
    • Laparoscopy: It is a surgical procedure that can be used to look inside the abdomen to check for signs of diseases. Small incisions are made inside the wall of the abdomen, and a laparoscope is inserted through it.
    • Biopsy: This is one of the most used tests for cancer detection. Cells or tissues from the affected organs are taken from the body through a needle and examined under a microscope to detect signs of cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is a highly treatable cancer compared to others, which are far more complicated. Some of the mainstream treatment options for pancreatic cancer are as follows:

    • Surgery: One of the most used treatment options for pancreatic cancer is Surgery. Imaging studies and other studies decide what kind of surgery should be used.

A potentially curative surgery is one in which the whole of the cancer tissue can be cut out from the unaffected pancreas. If the cancer is too widespread and cannot be cut entirely, then palliative surgery is performed, which aims to relieve the pain and symptoms.

    • Radiation therapy: High-energy rays can be used to kill cancer cells by radiation therapy. It is mainly given to patients after surgery to reduce the chances of getting the cancer back in case some cancerous cells are still left in the body.
    • Chemotherapy: It involves the administration of highly specialized cancer-killings through an IV infusion. Patients may require multiple sessions of chemotherapy according to their recovery rates and cancer stage.
    • Targeted treatments: Scientists have observed that multiple genes can be involved in pancreatic cancer metastasis. Lowering the actions of genes like BRAF, NTRK, HER2, EGFR, etc., can help reduce cancer advancement. Sometimes, targeted therapies work when traditional methods like chemotherapies are not effective.

Some of India’s best pancreatic cancer treatment hospitals are in Delhi. The cost of pancreatic cancer treatment varies among these hospitals.

The following are some factors that may influence the cost of treatment:

    • Location of the hospital; expertise of the medical staff and other amenities.
    • Diagnostic tests.
    • Treatments required: Some patients may undergo several chemotherapy radiation therapy sessions, which influence the cost of treatment.

Treatments like Immunotherapy might be more costlier.

    • Nutritional counseling, physiological counseling, family therapy sessions, and other supportive treatments may elevate the total cost.
