Usually, prostate cancer is diagnosed in men after 40 years. However, the increasing risk factors and advanced diagnosing methods have now led to a rise in diagnosis of prostate cancer in younger men. Although rare, men can get prostate cancer in their 20’s. Men who get diagnosed early also have more chances of getting cured.

Yes. Many patients who undergo a prostatectomy live a healthy life. Removing the prostate has some side effects, but they can mostly be taken care of by medications.

The PSA blood test is often the first test for prostate cancer. There are several at-home prostate cancer kits available.

Early prostate cancer often has no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include difficulty urinating, frequent urination at night, or weak urine flow. Some men experience blood in the urine or semen, but these signs typically appear in advanced stages.

Prostate cancer is usually diagnosed through a combination of PSA blood tests and a digital rectal exam (DRE). A biopsy may be done to confirm the diagnosis if abnormalities are found. Regular screening is vital for early detection, especially for men over 50 or with a family history.

Prostate cancer can often be cured, especially when caught early. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and active surveillance for slow-growing cases. Early-stage prostate cancers are usually curable by surgical removal of the prostate and other affected parts. Advanced stages may require hormone therapy or chemotherapy.

Choosing the right hospital for prostate cancer treatment is a critical task. This article will help you identify the key factors to consider while choosing a hospital. Keep reading till the end to clear all myths and learn facts about prostate cancer!

Prostate cancer starts in a gland/organ called the Prostate. It is situated below the bladder. It is found only in males, and hence, they can get prostate cancer. When the cells of the prostate gland divide out of control, it results in prostate cancer.

Prostate cancers are of many types based on the kind of cells affected. Once diagnosed, it is categorised into one of the four stages of cancer based on complexity and advancement.

    Types of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer can be of many types, but most of them are rare sub-types. Usually, only 1-2 types make up most of the prostate cancer cases.

    • Adenocarcinoma: Most of the types of prostate cancers are adenocarcinoma. The glandular cells of the prostate, which are responsible for producing prostate fluid(a component in the semen), are affected in this type.
    • Small cell carcinoma: This is a rare(2% of all prostate cancer cases) but rapidly growing type of prostate cancer. Neuroendocrine cells of the prostate gland are affected.
    • Transitional cell carcinoma: It originates in the urethra and the lining of the prostate duct. This type of cancer advances rapidly but is very rare.

    Stages of Prostate Cancer

    • Stage 1: Cancer has only affected the prostate gland. It may be sub-classified based on the area of invasion by the tumor.
    • Stage 2: Cancer is still localised to the prostate gland, but now it has a high capacity to grow out of the prostate and affect other organs.
    • Stage 3: Cancer is advancing faster and has affected the nearby tissues.
    • Stage 4: Cancer has metastasised and has affected other lymph nodes and organs.

The signs and symptoms of prostate cancer should not be ignored at all costs. You should immediately see a doctor if you face any of the following signs and symptoms:

    • Trouble urinating: The urethra(the tube that passes urine from the bladder) can get blocked by a cancerous prostate gland due to enlargement, which can lead to difficulty urinating.
    • Decreased force while urinating: You might feel a decreased force even when your bladder is filled.
    • Urine in blood: Blood in urine is the most important sign to look out for. You should never ignore urine in blood. Even if it isn't regular, seek medical help immediately.
    • Blood in semen: While it is a rare sign, some patients may see blood in their semen.
    • Unexplained rapid weight loss.
    • Erectile dysfunction: There are a lot of reasons for erectile dysfunction,n, and prostate cancer can be one.
    • Age: Prostate cancer is common for men above 60 years of age. However, it can also affect men beyond 40 years. Younger patients are very rarely seen.
    • Inherited genetic changes: Inherited variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are linked to various cancers. Men with a family history of Lynch syndrome are at a higher risk of getting cancer.
    • Family history: Men who have a brother or father affected by prostate cancer are two times more likely to get prostate cancer.
    • Lifestyle: An unhealthy lifestyle with less physical activity, an imbalanced diet, and smoking can all create a higher risk of getting cancer.

Early diagnosis of prostate cancer is critical to increase survival rates. Advanced cancers are complex and are rarely completely cured. Following are some ways to detect early-to-advanced-stage prostate cancer.

    • PSA test: PSA stands for Prostate-specific antigen, found in the semen and blood (small amounts). Higher levels of PSA in the blood and semen are indicative of prostate cancer.
    • Prostate Biopsy: A Biopsy is the most definitive way to diagnose prostate cancer. It involves taking a small part of the prostate tissue from various areas (10-12 areas). This tissue is then subjected to multiple microscopic and histopathological analyses to identify the presence of prostate cancer. A Biopsy can also help the doctor categorise the cancer into its respective stages.
    • Imaging tests: An ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan can give a clear view of the prostate gland. It allows the doctor to look for abnormal morphology, which can be an indication of prostate cancer.

A wide range of treatment options are available for prostate cancer. Choosing the proper treatment is based on several parameters. What works for someone else might not work for you, and vice versa.

Following are some of the treatment options that your doctor may suggest:

    • Surgery: The most commonly used surgery for prostate cancer is prostatectomy(removal of the entire prostate gland). It is a popular treatment option for early-stage cancers when the tumor hasn’t spread outside the organ.
    • Radiation: The use of high-energy beams to kill cancer cells by destroying their DNA is called radiation therapy. It can be external or internal (brachytherapy). It may cause the death of a few healthy cells near the tumor.
    • Cryotherapy or HIFU: Cryotherapy and High-intensity focussed ultrasound(HIFU) use ultra-low and high temperatures to kill the tumor cells.
    • Hormone therapy: Prostate cancer can use testosterone for its growth and spreading. Hormone therapy involves reducing testosterone production in the body through medications or surgery(to remove the testis).
    • Chemotherapy: It uses highly potent drugs that can specifically kill cancer cells. These drugs are either given in the body through an IV infusion or orally. Chemo can be a bit harsh on the body and may lead to fatigue, weakness, hair loss, etc.

The cost of prostate cancer differs for each individual. Cancer treatments are often complex, and specificities can vary depending on the cancer type and stage.

The following factors may affect the type of cancer:

    • Diagnostic tests can be a significant expense before the cancer is diagnosed and categorised into stages.
    • The locality of the hospital, its amenities, and the expertise of the medical staff also play a significant role in governing the cost of prostate cancer treatment.
    • Treatment options like targeted therapies and immunotherapies can be expensive compared to traditional options like chemo or radiation therapies.
    • Supportive care like nutritional counselling and physiotherapy after the surgery can also add to the overall cost.
    • Patients respond differently to treatments, and some may require multiple rounds of treatment for a full recovery.
