Some people report having painless lesions, while others may find skin cancer moles and scars itchy and painful to touch.

No. Skin cancer cannot spread by touch; it is not contagious. There is no harm in touching or being with a person with skin cancer.

Skin cancers are primarily found in areas exposed to the sun, like the scalp, face, ears, neck, lips, arms, legs, etc.

Skin cancer often appears as a new or changing mole, sore, or lump. Look for asymmetry, irregular borders, colour changes, or growth in size. Regular skin checks are vital to catch early signs. Signs of skin cancer may be difficult to notice in darker skin tones. Any irregularity in the skin which persists can be a sign of skin cancer.

Wearing sunscreen, avoiding tanning beds, and seeking shade during peak sun hours can help prevent skin cancer.  Until now, there hasn't been a vaccine to prevent skin cancer.
Regularly checking your skin for changes and seeing a dermatologist for suspicious lesions are key preventive steps.

Most skin cancers are treatable with surgery to remove the affected area. Skin is taken from other body parts to fill the removed area. Advanced cases where skin cancer has spread to bones and other organs may require radiation or targeted therapy. Early detection ensures simpler and more effective treatment.

Skin cancer is a rare kind of cancer in India. Several skin cancer hospitals in India offer comprehensive patient care with world-class treatment options. Choosing the right hospital for skin cancer treatment is critical.

Skin cancers are complex to diagnose and treat in individuals with a darker skin tone, like the majority Indian population. You must consider several factors to find the best skin cancer treatment hospital in Delhi. These factors can define your chances of surviving the cancer journey and make it less complicated.

Keep reading this article to learn about skin cancer and the factors contributing to choosing the best treatment hospital in Delhi.

Skin cancer affects the skin cells and causes their abnormal growth. The skin cells can acquire DNA mutations after UV light exposure. These mutations, over a long period, lead to skin cancer.

Skin cancers are curable if detected early and the proper treatment is available. The tumor can spread to different tissues if not treated early.

    Types of skin cancer

Skin cancer is of three major types:

    • Basal cell carcinoma originates in the basal cells in the lower part of the epidermis. It is the most common kind of skin cancer and can even affect people who have skin of color. If not treated in time, this type can spread deep into the bones and cause disfigurement.
    • Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common kind of skin cancer. It forms due to frequent exposure to the sun. This type can also spread quickly and affect other organs and functions of the body.
    • Melanoma is the most complex kind of skin cancer. It can spread fast in the body. It can grow within a mole you already have or separately on the skin.

    Stages of skin cancer

After diagnosing skin cancer, the doctors perform several tests to categorize the skin cancer into one of the following stages:

    • Stage 1: Cancer is smaller than 2 centimeters and hasn't spread across the body.
    • Stage 2: Cancer is more significant than 2 centimeters but smaller than 4 centimeters.
    • Stage 3: Cancer has grown larger than 4 centimeters; has grown into a bone or nerve, causing minor damage; has grown below the fat layer.
    • Stage 4: Cancer has spread to one or more lymph nodes and to bones and other parts of the body.

Any abnormal growth on your skin or a new mole can be a sign of skin cancer. The following are some specifics that you can look out for:

    • A new mole. You observe bleeding from this mole. It is usually of a different size and color than the normal ones.
    • An unusual bump on any part of your skin. Sometimes, these bumps can be oily or waxy.
    • A sore that bleeds and has a depression in the middle.
    • A wound or sore that doesn't go away, even after general medication.
    • Any rough lesion that is itchy bleeds, and has an irregular color.
    • Advanced-stage skin cancer patients may experience unexplained rapid weight loss or loss of appetite.

Various reasons can cause skin cancer. Usually, all these reasons work together to help cancer to grow.

The following are some risk factors for skin cancer:

    • Exposure to sunlight: Most skin cancers are caused by overexposure to sunlight. The UV rays from the sun can damage the DNA of the cells, leading to unorganized rapid division of the cells, causing cancer.
    • Age: Skin cancer is more common in women before 50 years and more common in men beyond 50 years. It affects people with lighter skin tones more than those with a dark skin tone.
    • Family history: Having a first relative with skin cancer increases your risk of getting skin cancer.
    •  Multiple moles
    • Immuno-suppressed patients: Patients who have had organ transplants are at a higher risk of getting skin cancer.
    • Smoking can increase the chances of getting skin cancer, especially the tumor affecting the lips.
    • Some inherited syndromes like Xeroderma pigmentosum or Gorlin syndrome can increase your risk of getting skin cancer.

Early diagnosis is critical for complete recovery from skin cancer. Following are some tests that your doctor may advise to detect skin cancer:

    • Skin biopsy: The best way to know if you have skin cancer is a biopsy. The doctor will remove the suspected area of the skin, and several microscopic and histopathological analyses will be carried out. Excision, shave, or patch Biopsy may be used depending on the case.
    • Imaging tests: Most types of skin cancers don't spread quickly. However, Melanoma can spread rapidly to different organs. A CT, MRI, or PET scan can be used to ensure other organs are safe.

Treating skin cancer is often easier than cancers that originate in other organs. Skin is readily available for any procedure, while other organs need to be accessed by a complex incision.

The following are the standard treatment options for skin cancer:

    • Surgery: Simple excision surgery removes the tumor part of the skin along with some parts of the normal tissue; micrographic surgery involves cutting skin into several layers and examining them until a healthy skin layer free of cancer is reached. Other kinds of surgeries may also be performed based on the individual case's needs.
    • Radiation therapy: High-energy radiation beams can kill cancer cells by disrupting their DNA. Radiation does not differentiate between healthy and cancerous tissue and thus may destroy some healthy cells around the tumor.
    • Chemotherapy: It uses drugs that can kill cancer cells. These drugs can either be given orally or through an IV infusion. Chemotherapy can also cause the death of a few healthy cells and weaken the body for the time being.
    • Immunotherapy: It helps the patient’s immune system to kill the cancer cells. There are various types of immunotherapy available. Some of these block proteins are called immune checkpoints. This allows the immune system to work without any hindrance. Cemiplimab and pembrolizumab are used to block immune inhibitors and treat skin cancer.

Skin cancer treatment costs depend on various factors. Some of these are:

    • Diagnostic tests can be a significant expense for skin cancer patients. A patient may undergo several examinations, biopsies, etc.
    • The hospital's location and the expertise of the staff can also play a significant role in the overall expense.
    • The cancer stage can also affect the cost of the treatment. Advanced stages of cancer may require expensive treatment with a lot of supportive care.
    • Post-operative costs like physiotherapies, psychological help, and nutritional counseling can also add up to the overall skin cancer treatment cost.

Amerix Cancer Hospital is a one-stop solution for comprehensive care of skin cancer. It hosts world-class equipment and experienced medical staff determined to offer compassionate care to skin cancer patients.
