60 years is the average age for uterine cancer patients in certain countries. Women younger than 45 years rarely get uterine cancer.

You may need up to 6 rounds of chemo, one every 3-4 weeks. This number might be different for every patient.

Yes. Hysterectomy(surgery to remove the uterus) is pretty standard, and you may even enjoy some benefits after the surgery if you have been suffering from pelvic pain or heavy menstrual bleeding.

Symptoms include abnormal vaginal bleeding, such as bleeding after menopause or between periods. Pelvic pain, unusual discharge, and pain during intercourse may also occur. Regular check-ups help in early detection. Detecting uterine cancer early increases the chances of complete cancer recovery.

Uterine cancer is diagnosed using a combination of pelvic exams, imaging tests, and a biopsy. The most definitive way to diagnose uterine cancer can be a biopsy. An ultrasound may also be used to check for abnormalities. Usually, a combination of tests is used. Early detection is key to successful treatment.

Risk factors include obesity, diabetes, and hormonal imbalances, such as excess estrogen. A family history of uterine or colon cancer also increases risk. Maintaining a healthy weight and regular screenings can lower your risk.

Uterine cancer cases in India are lesser than those in other countries. Still, many women affect many women, and finding the right uterine cancer hospital for treatment is crucial to complete recovery.

You should consider several factors before choosing the best uterine cancer treatment hospital in Delhi. Many Delhi hospitals offer the best treatment options and comprehensive care for uterine cancer.

Keep reading further to learn about uterine cancer and the factors influencing the selection of the best uterine cancer treatment hospital in Delhi.

The uterus, commonly known as the womb, can have some cells that undergo a mutation that causes them to divide unstoppably and create a mass of over-dividing cells called a tumor. Uterine cancer can spread fast if not treated and can affect the cervix, vagina, and the ovaries.

Early diagnosis of uterine cancer can lead to a complete recovery, but as the diagnosis gets delayed, the complexity increases.

    Types of Uterine Cancer

There are two main types of uterine cancer. However, there can be sub-types among these two based on the specific cells involved:

    • Endometrial cancer: It originates in the lining of the uterus and is called endometrium. It accounts for more than 90% of the overall uterine cancer cases, making it the most common type. Endometrial is also present in the cervix, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, and cancer originating there may also be classified as endometrial cancer.
    • Uterine Sarcoma: It is a pretty rare kind of uterine cancer, accounting for less than 5% of the total cases. This affects the uterus muscles and is sub-classified based on the particular cell involved.

    Stages of Uterine Cancer

After the cancer is diagnosed, several tests are performed to categorize the uterine cancer into one of the following four types:

    • Stage 1: Cancer is confined only to the uterus.
    • Stage 2: Cancer has spread to the cervix but not any further.
    • Stage 3: Cancer has affected the vagina, fallopian tubes and the ovaries.
    • Stage 4: Cancer has spread to distant organs like the bladder, rectum, lungs, etc.

Early signs and symptoms of uterine cancer are often not significant, which leads to delayed diagnosis. These are some of the common signs and symptoms of uterine cancer:

    • Heavier than usual vaginal bleeding.
    • Any amount of vaginal bleeding after menopause.
    • Vaginal bleeding between periods.
    • Abdominal cramps (at unusual times)
    • Having periods without any break.
    • Unexplained rapid weight loss.
    • Unusual discharge from the vagina with a strange smell.

Diagnosis and detection of uterine cancer involves several tests. Some of the commonly employed tests are as follows:

    • Physical examination: Often, the first way to diagnose uterine cancer is a physical examination with a qualified gynecologist. The doctor may check for swelling on the abdomen and unusual signs inside the vagina.
    • Ultrasound: There are several types of ultrasounds available for uterine cancer detection. Ultrasound uses sound waves that go through the body and echo back. They give different signs when they hit a tumor or other dense object, forming an image.
    • Hysteroscopy and Biopsy: A hysteroscopy uses a thin wire with a video camera and a light source. It is inserted into the vagina to get a clear view of the uterus. It also takes a sample of the suspected cancer tissue, called a biopsy. This tissue sample is taken for further analysis to check for histopathological signs of uterine cancer.

Many reasons can cause uterine cancer. There is no pinpoint reason that causes terrine cancer. However, these are the risk factors that you should watch out for:

    • Age: Older women are more likely to get affected by uterine cancer
    • Obesity: A leading cause of uterine cancer is obesity. Individuals with extra fatty tissue around the organs, like ovaries, can cause the hormone level to fluctuate. These hormone levels can then lead to abnormal growth of the cells. Obese women are three times more likely to get affected by uterine cancer.
    • Birth control pills: Several studies suggest that women who take birth control pills for a long time have a lower risk of uterine cancer.  However, the primary cause of starting a birth control pill shouldn't be protection from uterine cancer.
    • Tamoxifen: It is a drug that is used to treat breast cancer because it acts as anti-estrogen in the breast. Unfortunately, it acts as estrogen in the uterus, which may cause the cells in the uterine wall to grow continuously and develop into cancer.
    • Lifestyle: Less physical activity and an imbalanced diet can be a risk factor for uterine cancer. A high-fat and low-fiber diet should be avoided at all costs.
    • Family history: Women with a first relative with uterine cancer are at a higher risk of getting affected. Some women have Lynch syndrome, which puts them at a high risk for colon and endometrial cancer. Women with this syndrome have a 70% chance of getting uterine cancer compared to 3% in normal women.

The doctors can assess the treatment options once the cancer is staged correctly and the complexity is determined. Some of the standard treatment options for uterine cancer are as follows:

    • Surgery: For early-stage uterine cancers, surgery is often the best way to treat the cancer. In cases of uterine cancer, the surgery is often a hysterectomy, which is the removal of the uterus and nearby tissues which may also be affected. In some cases, the doctors may need to remove the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or cervix. Surgery can be provided as a treatment option with other treatment procedures like radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
    • Radiation therapy: High-energy radiation beams are used to kill cancer cells. This radiation treatment can be external or internal. Externally, radiation can be applied to specialized equipment for cancer-affected parts. Brachytherapy is a procedure to kill cancer cells by internal radiation.
    • Chemotherapy: The use of highly potent cancer-killing drugs through mouth or an IV injection is called chemotherapy. It is a harsh procedure and can damage some healthy cells, causing hair fall, fatigue, and weakness.
    • Hormone therapy: Hormones can help the cancer grow. Certain drugs can be used to block the functions or control the production of these hormones to limit cancer growth.
    • Targeted therapy: Cancer cells sometimes thrive due to the secretion of specific proteins or enzymes that are not useful to the healthy cells. These proteins and enzymes can be identified and targeted by specialized drugs.
    • Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy helps the person’s immune system to fight the cancer. It may act on immune inhibitors, activators, and other checkpoints in the immune system.

Uterine cancer treatment costs are dependent on various factors. Cost is different for all the patients.

These factors can affect the cost of uterine cancer treatment:

    • Diagnostic tests can be a significant expense before the cancer is diagnosed and categorized into stages.
    • Treatment options like targeted therapies and immunotherapies can be expensive compared to traditional options like chemo or radiation therapies.
    • Patients respond differently to treatments, and some may require multiple rounds of treatment for a complete recovery.
    • Supportive care like nutritional counseling and physiotherapy after the surgery can also add to the overall cost.
    • The locality of the hospital, its amenities, and the expertise of the medical staff also play a significant role in governing the cost of uterine cancer treatment.
